about the Phillipsburg Area Historical Society

The Phillipsburg Historical Society was organized in 1972 with the stated purpose of restoring the Roseberry-Gess house, as it was then called. The constitution was amended in 1984 to change the name (by including Area) and to broaden the purpose—"to discover, collect, publish and/or preserve anything deemed to be of historical significance to the Society or the Phillipsburg area." The Society is a 501(c)3 corporation, which means it is a tax-exempt non-profit organization. Any contribution is tax-deductible.

We have members from all the adjacent municipalities (including Easton) so it makes sense to try to be inclusive in our coverage of the western part of Warren County. Several municipalities have their own historical societies, and we expect to work closely with them to promote our mutual interests.

We maintain offices in the town's Municipal Building at 675 Corliss Avenue—right next to the Public Library. There is no phone in the office there, but you can contact any of the officers by phone or e-mail.

Preservation of the Roseberry Homestead (540 Warren Street, right by the Middle School) remains a primary purpose of the Society. The group of volunteers driving that effort operates as a committee of the Society, basically with its own budget. The photo on the right was taken during the town's Ole Towne Festival in late July. We had just installed the plexiglas windows, and liked the blue protective covering—we felt it called attention to the fact that something was happening at the site after so many years when it was boarded up. There's often a crew working there on weekends, so stop by if you have an opportunity. There is a separate website (actually a blog): www.roseberryhomestead.org that reports on the latest research, the work schedule, and other items of note during the restoration.

Incidentally, if it's old houses you are interested in, the LINKS tab will take you to a list of old houses in the area—almost all are on the National Register, or ought to be. There are many fascinating old stone houses and barns in this area—please let us know of any that you think ought to be pictured here on our LOCAL SITES page.
